BENEFITS OF THE DUAL DEGREE

A Structured Pathway to Graduate Study at Illinois

One of the most significant advantages of the MEADS programme is that it establishes a clearly structured and substantially facilitated pathway to graduate study at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign.

Under the Dual Master’s Degree framework, students who successfully complete MEADS at the University of Macedonia may apply for admission to either the M.S. in Economic Modeling, AI, and Data Science (EMAIDS) or the M.S. in Policy Economics (MSPE) at Illinois.

More specifically, MEADS graduates who:

  • complete the programme with a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale,
  • obtain recommendations from at least two faculty members confirming their preparedness for graduate study at Illinois, and
  • satisfy the minimum admission requirements of EMAIDS or MSPE,

shall be granted admission to the corresponding Illinois programme, subject to the terms of the agreement and the applicable institutional requirements.

This framework makes MEADS an especially attractive option for students seeking to establish a strong academic foundation in Greece while maintaining a clearly defined pathway toward advanced graduate study in the United States.

Opportunities for Credit Transfer

MEADS students may also benefit from the possibility of transferring academic credit toward the Illinois graduate programmes.

Under the Dual Master’s Degree framework, up to three MEADS courses may be transferred toward either EMAIDS or MSPE, subject to grade requirements, course equivalency, and the academic regulations of the receiving programme.

Eligible MEADS courses currently include:

  • Microeconomics
  • Macroeconomics
  • Econometrics I
  • Industrial Organization
  • Game Theory
  • Environmental Economics

This credit-transfer opportunity reduces unnecessary duplication of coursework and allows students to progress more efficiently through the international academic pathway.

Scholarship and Financial Support Opportunities

High-performing MEADS graduates who continue their studies at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign may be considered for merit-based financial support.

According to the Dual Master’s Degree framework, selected MEADS graduates may be eligible for:

  • partial tuition waivers,
  • hourly assistantships, or
  • other forms of merit-based financial support.

Such support may be awarded upon admission, following the completion of coursework, or on the basis of academic performance during the programme.

All scholarship and assistantship decisions remain at the discretion of the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign and are subject to institutional regulations and the availability of funding. Nevertheless, the possibility of financial support significantly enhances the attractiveness of the MEADS pathway for ambitious students seeking high-quality international graduate education.

Sequential Degrees and International Academic Experience

The Dual Master’s Degree framework is based on a sequential degree structure. Under this model, students complete the academic requirements of one institution before enrolling in and completing the requirements of the second institution.

Each university independently awards its own degree after the student has fulfilled all academic, administrative, and graduation requirements of the respective programme.

This structure enables students to:

  • begin their graduate studies at the University of Macedonia,
  • develop a strong analytical foundation through MEADS,
  • continue their studies at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign,
  • transfer eligible graduate coursework, and
  • potentially graduate with degrees from both institutions.

A Strong Choice for Internationally Oriented Students

MEADS is an excellent choice for students seeking more than a conventional graduate degree. The programme combines rigorous academic training, applied quantitative skills, international orientation, and a structured connection to graduate study in the United States.

The programme is particularly well suited for students interested in careers in:

  • economic analysis,
  • data science,
  • policy evaluation,
  • business analytics,
  • financial and monetary analysis,
  • environmental and public policy,
  • consulting,
  • international organisations,
  • research institutions,
  • or further doctoral studies.

Through its collaboration with the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, MEADS provides students with a strong platform for academic advancement and professional development in an increasingly data-driven global economy.
